  • Galvis Named to Postseason All-Star Team
    Published on: 8/27/2008
18-year-old honored as league''s top shortstop

Lakewood BlueClaws shortstop, Freddy Galvis, was named to the South Atlantic League 2008 Annual All-Star Team as announced today by league president Eric Krupa. The All-Star Team was voted on by the 16 South Atlantic League Teams'' Field Managers, General Managers, Sportswriters and Broadcasters for a total of 64 votes.

Galvis, 18, is known throughout the league for his sparkling defense and has also made great strides in his offense as the season has progressed. With seven games remaining, he has the highest fielding among shor-

tstops (.968) in the SAL and has had more total chances (626) than any other middle- infielder. At the plate, he has posted a .242 average with three home runs and 42 RBI and has also added 14 steals.

Signed by the Phillies out of Punto Fijo, VZ in 2006 as a 16-year-old, he made his professional debut with the Williamsport Crosscutters (NYPL) last season. He hit .203 with 7 RBI in an injury shortened season.

Galvis becomes the fourth BlueClaw to earn a spot on the postseason all-start team. All of Lakewood''s selections have come in the last three seasons. Quintin Berry was the lone representative in 2007 while Carlos Carrasco and Matt Maloney swept the pitching awards in 2006.

The Annual All-Star Team was highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Madison Bumgarner of the Augusta GreenJackets was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Bumgarner''s current ERA (1.45) is the best in the league, he currently ranks 1st in Strikeouts (155) and boasts a 14-3 record.

Asheville third baseman Darin Holcomb was selected as the Most Valuable Player. Holcomb is currently batting .314 in 131 games, 488 at bats, with 153 Hits and 13 home runs.

Jason Heyward, outfielder for the Rome Braves, was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Heyward is batting .323 with 145 hits and 11 home runs in 120 games.

Joe Mikulik of the Asheville Tourist has been selected as the Manager and Ross Grimsley of the Augusta GreenJackets has been selected as the Coach of the 2008 Annual All-Star team. For both Mikulik and Grimsley, this is the second year in a row that they have been selected to the All-Star Team.

The Asheville Tourists placed four players on the Annual All-Star Team. The Tourist representatives include Jhoulys Chacin (right-handed pitcher), Everth Cabrera (second base), Darin Holcomb (third base and Most Valuable Player) and Michael Mitchell (outfielder). The West Virginia Power had three representatives, including Eric Fryer (designated hitter), Steffan Wilson (utility infielder) and Caleb Gindl (utility outfielder). The Rome Braves had two representatives, including Frederick Freeman (first base) and Jason Heyward (outfielder and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect). Augusta, Charleston, Greensboro and Lakewood each had one representative on the All-Star Team. Augusta''s Madison Bumgarner (left-handed pitcher and Most Outstanding Pitcher), Charleston''s Jesus Montero (catcher) and Greensboro''s Michael Stanton (outfielder) complete the All-Star lineup.
